We’ll be talking to a new creative every week. This week we’re chatting with Meme, a college student, from Canley. If you wanna work with Meme, or get involved with a project drop her a DM @meme_horner.

Can you tell me a little bit about yourself?

My name is Meme, I am 16, and I have 7 siblings. I live in Canley in Coventry and I am in Year 11 at school. I enjoy school and the learning environment, I miss being taught in person. I plan to go to college to complete a Diploma Level 3 course in Health and Social Care. I want to work with children, to gain experience I have volunteered previously at Youth Centres and Church.

Creative Call Out - Meme

Meme thinks there should be more youth centres in Canley.

What are things you think can be provided for you in Coventry/ you think young people need?

Canley lacks places for younger children to go. In the area, many 10 year olds and below are out in the streets hanging in the wrong circles. I believe that having a Youth Centre would keep them off the streets. This would be a place where they feel welcome and are around other kids their age, it would add a sense of peace. They also wouldn’t feel the need to join the bad crowd.

What would you like this youth centre to have?

The internet is widely used now so possibly game consoles e.g PS4 or a sort of arcade. It would bring the kids together and teach them teamwork. Also, having FIFA tournaments and sports would teach the kids/youth teamwork and allow them to get to know people and learn people’s strengths and weaknesses.

I used to make necklaces and earrings using beads. I believe there could be creative activities such as arts and crafts at the Youth Centre for girls. Having music or karaoke would also be great.

How do you stay safe as a young woman in Coventry?

I don’t go out. However, I think kids should be able to go out, have fun and experience life independently without being scared of things such as stabbings and muggings.
