Simmer Down Festival is Back – and this time it’s Crucial!

By | Blog | No Comments

SimmerDown2017-MainFlyerSimmer Down Festival is back after a year off in 2016, with new partnerships and new features. Simmer Down Festival aims to offer youth opportunities for Brimingham and West Midlands music lovers. Based in the North West Birmingham, the neighbouring regions welcome the return of the rapidly growing free reggae and world music festival, with opportunities lined up for our young people, we are looking forward to developing opportunities.

Crucial Sponsors

This year the festival is more sustainable than ever, as it has blended public and private sector partnerships to create a day of music and food experiences for the 60,000 strong multicultural community of Handsworth and North West Birmingham.  The lead sponsor of the event is Birmingham-based food manufacturing company, Crucial Sauces. The Crucial Sauce Company have pinned their name and reputation to the Midlands’ largest reggae and world music and food event, reflecting their pride in their Birmingham roots and their multicultural values.

Since 2001 the Crucial Sauce Company has been producing products that people love. Our wide range of flavours, from around the world, are used and enjoyed in and out of the home. Whether it be restaurants, take aways, cafés or mobile caterers we are the go-to crucial brand for many of the food vendors in our city.

We are delighted to be partnering with and sponsoring The 2017 Simmer Down Festival. It gives us a unique and fantastic opportunity to both support and celebrate with our local community.”

JA Digital Media - Simmer Down 2015 LR-131Festival Return

The absence of a free community festival for lovers of world music was intensely felt last year. Organisers temporarily parked the festival over 2016 for review and planning, following the closure of key partner and arts-based ally, The Drum Cultural Arts Centre. They have since worked hard to make sure that Simmer Down can come back better and stronger than ever.

“Simmer Down Festival 2017 is now shaped to bring communities together, as we have harnessed partnerships and collaborations with passionate local organisations that want to give Handsworth and the surrounding areas of Birmingham the multicultural experiences and enjoyment that they deserve.”

– Simmer Down Festival Board Member

The free one-day festival is happening on 23rd July, at Handsworth Park. Lyfeproof has been delivering projects in the Northwest area of Birmingham with schools that are in the region of the festival, like, Handsworth Wood Girls, Hamstead Hall, Hollyhead, Aston Manor,  and Holte – all secondary academies. The festival is expected to draw 20,000 people and will be headlined by reggae legend Freddie McGregor. Other performers include Macka B, The Big Ship Band and many more local musicians and performing artists from a range of world music genres showcasing across two stages. We have over 40 roles available for young people to take part in. Some specialised roles are paid opportunities.

Youth and Employablity – The Lyfeproof Approach

By | Blog | No Comments

In our next blog, Ashlee E L Roberts discusses employability, education and how Lyfeproof helps young people fuse the two concepts together

Employment can be daunting for young people.

Whilst education makes students cultured; its teachings rarely hum the tune of employability. Schools often blur the lines between the two, but here at Lyfeproof, we encourage young people to recognise their differences and nurture them both equally in weight.

So, let’s break down the concepts, and find out why they are so fundamentally different:

Education

Most of us have access to a good, well-rounded education. This gives us the basic grounding to our surroundings.

Schools enable young people to see society through humanistic, artistic and scientific eyes. Even the laborious lessons on Henry VIII gives students a good grasp on hierarchies and politics – even if they’re not aware of it at the time.

At the end of our educational journeys, we are awarded certificates and merits of achievement – this is our passport into the world of employment

employablity

Are schools helping students to become employable?

Employability

Assertive?

Dedicated?

Do you work well in a team?

This is a small example of CV buzz-words that make job applicants appealing.

Employers want candidates who can show initiative and engage in interpersonal relationships. Everything is magnified in the workplace – poor punctuality in school or skipping sessions can translate horrendously to employers. Nobody wants to hire someone who is unreliable and lacks integrity. They want a personified version of their business.

In short: If your qualities doesn’t match; it makes you unemployable.

employablity

Here at Lyfeproof, we help unlock employability skills in young people via fun, creative ways

The Difference

There is a big problem when education is mistaken for employability.

Of course, having qualifications gives you a huge advantage in the job world, but it’s almost become a standard expectation for millennials to have a degree or an equivalent.

Having knowledge does not automatically make you employable. Graduates must learn how to use it to the benefit of their employers or their own entrepreneurial ambitions.

This contributes to why a third of graduates now work in non-professional roles and why a further seven percent of graduates end up unemployed after leaving university.

Schools rarely teach students how to integrate into the workplace. Without employability skills acquired through work experience or training programmes, applicants have only their qualifications to rely on. Sadly, this is not enough to become employable.

So, in a world of clones, how can candidates stand out?

Our fun training sessions will unleash your employable qualities

Lyfeproof and Youth Employability

Here at Lyfeproof, we teach young people how to fuse their education with attractive qualities employers’ desire.

Through fun, creative activities and training, young people will develop a range of skills to help sell themselves effectively and grow in confidence.

We want to help portray the best version of you

Education is the passport.

Employability is the luggage.

Through Lyfeproof, we will help you arrive as a full package, ready and equipped for the world of employment.

“It was clear straight away that this placement would be perfect to teach me all the admin and behind the scenes paper work that goes into making an event successful. I know other companies that do one or two aspects Aspire4U offered me but I am certain I would not get nearly as much out of them as I did here” – Tembi Xena
