Can you tell me a little bit about yourself?

My name is Rhys, I am 21. I am an upcoming photographer from Wolverhampton and I study at Walsall College. A couple of my hobbies besides photography are resin and gaming. Before Covid I’d do a lot of family and friends shoots. I had opportunities within photography such as shooting weddings and events. However, this has stopped due to Covid. My photography page consists of a lot of landmarks, studios, shoots, and sets.

What opportunities do you think should be made available?

My photography group was the biggest group Walsall College has ever had, more events like the big sleep out should be available to people. Another good opportunity could be for local councils and schools to get involved more with hosting events where young photographers can build a portfolio out of them.

Sometimes you get photographers who put themselves way too up there, but free shoots need to be something they should consider as they really help build connections and your portfolio. More work equals more recognition. More free opportunities like this would be amazing. A lot of people I know and a lot of people in general would love free opportunities and events.

Creative Call Out - Rhys

21 Year old Rhys believes local councils could do more to help young photographers build their portfolio.

How can colleges help you reach your full potential?

I believe most lecturers don’t invest enough, they don’t help us push back our own fears, and they don’t allow us to be confident adults. Before you have it there’s young creatives who don’t meet their full potential. Walsall college is great with this and is very supportive, maybe other colleges should take notes.

In my experience my partner didn’t really like classes, but for him and photography the lecturers are exceptional. They’re always staying in touch, and sharing connections with specialist people to do talks and classes. He brought someone who owns one of the best b&w printing companies, which helps with inspiration and things. So in his experience he’s lucky/ the college is doing a lot of really good work. I think other college’s should also be like this with other courses and creative subjects.
